Kognito Releases an Interactive Information Literacy Tutorial for University Students

Kognito Solutions LLC, an award-winning e-learning company, today announced the release of an online information literacy tutorial to help university students develop effective business research skills. The flash-based interactive tutorial can be viewed online at www.kognito.net/infolit.

NEW YORK (PRWEB) January 20, 2006 -- Kognito Solutions LLC, an award-winning e-learning company, today announced the release of an online information literacy tutorial to help university students develop effective business research skills.

The tutorial, entitled “Beginner’s Guide to Business Research,” was commissioned by Baruch College of the City University of New York and developed in conjunction with lead content contributor Louise Klusek of Baruch’s Newman Library. The flash-based interactive tutorial can be viewed online at www.kognito.net/infolit.

The tutorial provides students with hands-on, self-paced instruction on where and how to find the best, most accurate information on the Web when conducting business research. While the objectives of the tutorial correspond with the Association of College and Research Libraries’ guidelines for information literacy, the tutorial’s content was customized to meet the specific needs of Baruch and its students. The tutorial includes interactive activities, library database simulations, and a cumulative interactive quiz with customized feedback.

To motivate students to use and complete the tutorial, it was designed and marketed as a tool to help them conduct business research more quickly and effectively. Tying the tutorial to a relevant and practical task provided the adequate incentive to engage students in building information literacy skills.

Responses from Baruch’s student body over the Fall 2005 pilot study confirmed the success of this approach. For example, over 92% of the students reported that, after taking the tutorial, they were confident in their research skills, compared to only 15% who were confident before. In addition, over 70% of the students mentioned that they plan to use 10-K filings – a valuable financial resource rarely used by college students – in their future research. Students raved about how they can now find credible, accurate information more quickly and easily.

“At Baruch, we are dedicated to providing students with the tools they need to develop critical information literacy skills and become independent, lifelong learners,” said Arthur Downing, Chief Information Officer at Baruch. “Working with Kognito has been a great experience. Their process and team made the development of this project simple and efficient. Following the success of this tutorial, Baruch is planning to introduce similar tutorials targeting liberal arts and natural sciences research.”

“We are thrilled with the results of this tutorial,” said Kognito’s Lead Instructional Designer Jenelle Boucher. “It was a great experience conducting focus groups with students and working with Baruch’s faculty and staff to ensure the end product aligned with Baruch’s learning objectives.”

Kognito’s Director of Business Development, Ron Goldman, commented that “this tutorial is evidence of the talent of our team and their ability to work closely with academic institutions in developing cutting-edge learning resources that enhance students’ learning experiences and support organizational strategic objectives.”

“Beginner’s Guide to Business Research” can be viewed online at www.kognito.net/infolit.
