Debt Problems Affecting Health, Says Debt Counsellors' Survey

The Debt Counsellors Annual UK Debt Survey has revealed that 63.3% of those seeking debt help believe that their health has suffered as a direct result of their debt problems.

(PRWEB) January 15, 2007 -- As many as 63.3% of people seeking help for their debts in the UK believe their health has been adversely affected by their debt problems, according to the Debt Counsellors Annual UK Debt Survey.

The revelation provides more evidence that personal debt in the UK is getting out of control, with the total now estimated at nearly £1.3 trillion and rising by £1 million every four minutes.

Personal insolvencies are also on the increase: in the third quarter of 2006 there were 27,644 individual insolvencies in England and Wales - a year-on-year rise of 66.3%.

John Porter, a senior counsellor with the Debt Counsellors, says debts can lead to health problems in several ways: "Debt problems can obviously lead to stress, and if you are stressed your immune system can suffer, making you more prone to illness. Also, stress can have a detrimental effect on cardiovascular health."

Porter adds: "Of course, suffering with debt problems can also affect one's mental and emotional health and lead to depression and anxiety.

"It's a catch 22 situation. Someone suffering stress or anxiety is less able to make the right choices when it comes to dealing with the debt problem itself."

However, Porter insists that there are debt solutions available for even the most serious cases of personal debt, and recommends that those struggling with their debts seek professional debt counselling.

"Anyone worried about their debts and their level of borrowing should seek professional debt advice as soon as possible to avoid further problems," he says.

The Debt Counsellors provide free and confidential advice for all kinds of debt problems.
