Broadcasting Company Brings Terrestrial Digital Television Service to Ireland

MDS America Inc. (MDSA), a digital wireless broadcasting technology company, has announced the successful deployment of the first Terrestrial Digital Television distribution system in Ireland.

Stuart, Fla. (PRWEB) May 22, 2007 -- MDS America Inc. (MDSA), a Stuart, Fla.-based digital wireless broadcasting technology company, has announced the successful deployment of the first Terrestrial Digital Television distribution system in Ireland.

Using equipment developed by MDS America Inc. for deployment in U.S.-based MVDDS (Multi-channel Video and Data Distribution Service) systems, SCTV Digital in Carrigaline, County Cork, Ireland becomes the first all-Irish owned digital television service. Using MDSA's system, SCTV Digital has the complete bandwidth of a Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) system without launching a satellite. The system uses the same frequencies that DBS satellites use.

"I suppose, looking at the technology, we were excited by it," said John Hurley, SCTV chairman. "The very fact that it was flexible and could not alone deliver many television channels, but it had the added capacity whereby we could have video on demand, and down the line install broadband Internet, which is very important in rural Ireland. We also had the capability of remote access whereby our head end could be accessed remotely and worked on remotely. All of those features really suited the type of operation that we were and would fit with the plan that we have here."

In late 2006, SCTV Digital - in cooperation with MDS America - started the initial 'Phase I' roll-out from five sites covering the greater Munster region in Ireland, which included broadcasting more than 60 channels of digital television. SCTV Digital is licensed to transmit and broadcast from 28 locations throughout southern Ireland, and has an option to obtain licenses for the entire country.

According to MDSA representatives, acceptance of the new service has been as much as SCTV Digital can handle - with new orders outstripping the ability to deploy. MDSA helped ignite the MVDDS market with its contributions to the Federal Communications Commission's MVDDS rule making. MDSA is a sister company of MDS Operations, which owns similar MVDDS licenses in 80 markets in the United States.
